10 Best WWE Matches Ever To Take Place In The UK
8. The British Bulldog Vs. Shawn Michaels - One Night Only 1997
Ah, One Night Only. What a show this was! Great matches like Bret Hart versus The Undertaker, Vader versus Owen Hart and Hunter Hearst Helmsley versus Dude Love showed that this was no run-of-the-mill televised house show. Oh no, the matches were full of great action and the performers looked - shock - motivated.
Topping off a stellar card was Shawn Michaels and British Bulldog clashing over the European Championship. These two had good chemistry with one another and usually produced a stirring bout thanks to the size versus speed dynamic and Shawn's crazy bumping style.
This was one of their better efforts, as the action inside the ring was as fluid and inspiring as ever. Shawn gave one of his best heel performances here, no doubt. However, it cannot rank higher due to the unfortunate circumstances surrounding its conclusion.
See, Bulldog had been telling the British press for weeks that he was going to win the match for his cancer-stricken sister, who was sitting at ringside, all but ensuring the victory. That was going to be the case, a Bulldog win and successful title defence, before Michaels played a political card and got the result changed so that he walked out as champ.
It was a really, really petty thing to do. There was pretty much no reason to do it, other than to piss off the fans in the Birmingham NEC (oh, they were mad) and stick it to the Hart family in the run-up to Montreal.
While the result is hard to stomach, the actual content of the match is great and so it makes the cut.
