10 Best WWE Matches Ever To Take Place In The UK
9. Ric Flair Vs. Tito Santana - Battle Royal At The Albert Hall 1991
There's a good chance that many of you reading this will have never seen this match before since the show it is on is not on the Network and is pretty hard to come by on DVD (it was released in the UK as part of Silver Vision's 'Tagged Classics' series).
The show itself, a B-level house show taking place in London's Royal Albert Hall, a great venue it has to be said, was not very good as an overall event. The 1991 roster - y'know, your Jim Duggans, Earthquakes and Barbarians - did not exactly inspire quality in-ring competition.
The Dirtiest Player in the Game and a pre-Matador Tito Santana, though, could always be relied upon to deliver some exciting action between the ropes. Santana was such a good babyface and he was the perfect opponent here for the so-called 'Real' World's Champion.
The two went back and forth with good, old-fashioned wrestling and expertly built the match to the point where you believed that Santana might actually get the upset. It was not to be, as Flair used a rollup and a hand full of tights to get the duke, but it was certainly a great performance from both.
The thing I liked about this match was that it felt like one of those Flair/Steamboat NWA main events, with the plucky Santana as The Dragon's avatar, fighting the cheating Flair with everything he had. There may have only been 5,000 in attendance on the night, but they were really into it and their reactions and participation helped the match.
