When Shawn Michaels lost his smile in February 1997, his abdication of the WWE Championship meant that a four way restart of the Royal Rumble finale would have the gold at stake. Unlike most four way matches, the only way to eliminate your opponent here was via throwing them over the top rope like in a standard battle royal.

Vader bled profusely after Undertaker demolished him at ringside with steel chairs and the ring steps, while Austin gutted out his part of the match while riddled with the flu. Hart ended up winning the gold for the fourth time after clotheslining Undertaker over the ropes, but would lose the strap 24 hours later to Psycho Sid, the man Michaels was supposed to drop the belt to three days earlier.
