10 Best WWE Moments That Reignited Your Passion For Wrestling
1. 2016 - Kevin Owens, AJ Styles & Shinsuke Nakamura Are Your Current Champions
This was unthinkable even just as recently as WrestleMania this April.
Nakamura had just debuted, with Finn Balor still immersed in his seemingly never ending title reign (what do you mean it was less than a year?!). AJ Styles had lost at the big show to Chris Jericho (WHO loses to Chris Jericho?! The man that had been beaten at 'Mania by FANDANGO!) and Kevin Owens had just lost his Intercontinental Championship to Zack freaking Ryder, the guy that had never even heard his entrance music played at The Showcase of the Immortals.
Things were looking bleak upon the conclusion of WrestleMania 32. I mean, these guys don't even look like supermodels! Although, AJ Styles could do a shampoo commercial for my money (provided he beats Edge and Booker T in a match for it first).
So, a lot has changed over the last five months. WWE re-split the brands (because it worked really well the first time, apparently) and embarked upon a "New Era". I might have put that in inverted commas, but the fact is that WWE are backing up their words. The guys people want to see are being featured prominently. It might be four years too late, but even Dolph Ziggler is getting opportunities.
Perhaps the personification of this shift is AJ Styles himself. Signed to be a "good hand", they didn't see him getting to a very high level in WWE, hence his loss to Jericho at 'Mania. Then, Roman needed an opponent, and AJ made him look like a million bucks. He then transitioned to a heel during a feud with John Cena and has been sprinting with the ball that was tentatively handed to him.
WWE trust him so much now that he beat John Cena CLEAN at SummerSlam. Okay, that's not as massive as it once was, but they backed that up with him winning the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at Backlash.
Owens is much a similar story, albeit over a longer period. He may have only won the title due to Finn Balor's injury, and Nakamura may have only gotten his chance due to the NXT roster being obliterated, but you know that they're both going to put on a great showing and earn the trust of the higher ups, just like AJ did.
Having stars such as these three as the top champions is a moment hardcore wrestling fans have been waiting for nigh on a decade, and something we never in our wildest dreams thought we'd actually see. It's a great time to be a wrestling fan right now and there are signs that WWE are actually listening to us, its loyal fanbase, and giving up the ghost on chasing casual fans.
For now though, just sit back, relax and just enjoy the moment because as this list shows, it could very well be fleeting!
