Did Kevin Owens make the best immediate impact ever in WWE? He answered Cena's US Title open challenge but decided he was too good for that title, instead just talking some trash and laying Cena out. He was rewarded for his efforts with a match at the following Elimination Chamber pay-per-view.

It was there, that the unthinkable happened: he beat John Cena clean in the middle of the ring. At that point, such an accomplishment was still a rare feat and meant a lot for the superstars that could pull it off.

Kevin Owens is basically the anti-Cena. He doesn't look like a bodybuilder, he doesn't pander to kids, he's snarky and sarcastic and he can actually wrestle (sorry, I couldn't resist). I may be joking about Cena not being able to wrestle, but despite their builds, he's certainly not as athletic in the ring as Owens is, which is part of what makes Owens so damn good. That's why we love him.

Naturally, when we love a star, we assume that Vince doesn't and that Cena will eat him alive. That's exactly what we expected here. Maybe Owens would get a fluke, dirty win with some sort of cheating or interference, but to beat him clean as a whistle was jaw dropping for most of us. Was this a sign of WWE finally changing and moving away from Super-Cena (retrospectively, it definitely was, but we didn't dare believe it)?

This victory for Owens (and us) gave the air that things could be a-changin' and had us glued to our TVs to see how the rest of the feud unfolded. We may have been left disappointed as usual, but the original victory was enough to make us believe and keep watching.
