One of the main criticisms leveled at WWE over the last decade or so is that they don't know how to create new stars any more, but The Shield are an obvious exception to this rule, with all three dominating the main events over the last couple of years, arguably receiving stronger booking than Superman himself.

WWE just got The Shield right, and it started with them making a big impact right on their debut, coming through the crowd and getting involved in the main event of Survivor Series 2012 between CM Punk, Ryback and John Cena, ensuring that Punk kept hold of his title.

The great thing about The Shield was that they got people excited about them right off the bat. Seth Rollins had made a name for himself in Ring of Honor a few years earlier and Dean Ambrose had made a rumble not just in CZW, but had also made waves down in WWE developmental territory FCW, and people were already dying to see him debut.

They added their homegrown talent Roman Reigns to the mix to make the group look more imposing, as well as knowing that the two experienced workers could cover how green he was, and it all worked a treat.

In the immediate aftermath of their debut, people couldn't wait to see what would come of this. Were they working for Punk? Was Paul Heyman creating a stable of his "guys" or were these three just intent on causing chaos? Nobody knew, but we damn sure couldn't wait to find out.
