4. Keith Lee's Title Victory

In many ways, Keith Lee’s victory of both the North American Championship and NXT Championship on The Great American Bash TV event is an embodiment of many of USA Network NXT’s issues.

There wasn’t a major narrative build to it, no major adversities that Lee’s character had experienced on the path to the championships, and the match didn’t truly deliver on the level that a major NXT title change should have. It should have happened months earlier when Lee’s momentum was at its peak, or later on when there was a major build to an angle with Cole. It never led to anything major, as he was booked to vacate the NA title before taking a clean pinfall loss to Karrion Kross for his NXT title shortly after.

Yet, despite these imperfections, it still felt monumental for a perpetually underrated indie darling to get his moment in the sun after years of hard work. It felt important to see NXT’s first male Black world champion since Big E be widely celebrated on the biggest platform the developmental brand has ever had. It might not have been perfect but it was still something special.
