SummerSlam 2020 would be the first major WWE event held outside of the Performance Center since March. Although fans would still not be permitted, WWE fans would be allowed to attend virtually and be seen virtually on LED boards in the Amway Center. WWE called this new experience the "Thunderdome".

Despite WWE having their backs against the wall with booking another big-four PPV without a proper audience, they seriously delivered and SummerSlam 2020 became one of the best pay-per-views in the established history of SummerSlam.

The show featured the in-ring debut of Dominik Mysterio who wrestled Seth Rollins in the match of the night, and easily one of the best in-ring debuts of all time. The WWE Title was decided in a match between Randy Orton and Drew McIntyre in a match where they didn't use a single finishing move - this was a refreshing and welcomed change.

Asuka would face both Sasha Banks and Bayley in separate matches in a fun storyline that ran throughout parts of the show. In the main event - The Fiend Bray Wyatt won back the Universal Title in a Falls Count Anywhere match against Braun Strowman which also featured the return of Roman Reigns after six months away from the WWE.
