9. Downfall - Trust Company (Vengeance 2002)

The whispering vocals of Trust Company’s Kevin Palmer over the heavy drop-d tuning of double guitars sells a story of a formidable future. The brimming quiet of the verses erupt into an anthemic chorus where Palmer’s distinctive voice really shines. Much like a wrestling match, the song builds to a climax, resting and igniting with precision.

One of the band’s best known songs, Downfall was released in 2002 and enjoyed substantial airplay on both radio and TV (anyone remember MTV2 Request?). In a rare instance, the song was released as a single with its B-side, Falling Apart, also being used by WWE for the Royal Rumble in 2003.

For an event with such an entertaining main event, Vengeance 2002 often gets forgotten, sandwiched as it was between Brock Lesnar’s King of the Ring win and his first WWE Championship when he defeated The Rock at SummerSlam 2002.

Broken down lyrically, Downfall is far from the most complex of songs, but its simplicity almost works in its favour. A no nonsense barrage, it is the musical equivalent of pounding fists followed by flowing sentons. Even fifteen years after the fact, the song still stands the test of time and is enjoyable to this day.
