8. The End (Armageddon 2000)
Owing more than a wink and a nod to The Doors track of the same name, The End is a sombre cataclysm of reverb drenched vocals and mounting strings. An unsettling and grandiose piece, it erupts with the force of a missile blitz and devolves into a musical war-zone of crashing drums and distorted guitar.
With WWE’s fondness for hyperbole, the song became the ultimate tool for adding an inflated sense of conflict to any feud. When this song played over the expertly produced hype packages, we as fans were left with the impression that we weren’t simply watching another mere wrestling match. This was war.
Composed by Jim Johnston, the theme has been remixed and altered numerous times over the years but there is something intriguingly sinister about the original version. The vacant atmosphere lent itself to the overblown action that often accompanied it.
In recent years, the song has become a bit of a utility player of sorts but its most effective outing was to promote the monumental Six Man Hell in a Cell main event at Armageddon 2000.
As the song breaks down, the vocals wail the refrain with a resigned reverence, maniacally preaching about the chaos that is sure to follow.
