10 Best WWE Royal Rumble Performances Ever

5. Steve Austin - 1999

€œStone Cold€ Steve Austin was the most popular WWE superstar in the late-nineties, and is arguably the most popular wrestler ever. It€™s no surprise that he won the Royal Rumble three times (1997, 1998, 2001) but his best performance came in a Rumble that he didn€™t actually win. In 1999, Vince McMahon was doing everything he could to keep Austin away from the WWF Championship, so placed him at #1 in the Royal Rumble. This backfired on McMahon when the WWF Commissioner, Shawn Michaels made Vince himself the #2 entrant in the match. McMahon quickly left the ring under the bottom rope and was chased by Austin who was led into a trap and beaten mercilessly in a public bathroom by The Corporation. Stone Cold would be out for much of the match, but returned to find the ring filling up with Corporation members and sympathisers. Austin would eventually be eliminated last by Vince McMahon, who took him by surprise to win the match. While Austin spent much of the match outside the ring, he still lasted from start to finish and managed to eliminate seven men (and one woman) before victory was cruelly snatched from his grasp.
