Some white tape, a comfy chair, a mirror and a maniacal boss who revels in spitting hate at the camera is all you need for TV gold. At least, that was the case on the 24 January 2002 edition of SmackDown when Vince McMahon, fresh off a loss to Ric Flair four days earlier at Royal Rumble, threatened to "inject the WWF with a lethal dose of poison".

N...n...n...n...n...New World Order.

It was too late for the WCW 'Invasion', granted, but any old-school fan of that company would surely have been gripped by McMahon's promise to kill his own creation with the cancerous nWo. Suddenly, images of Hulk Hogan, Scott Hall and Kevin Nash back on WWF television danced through our minds, and it seemed fun at the time.

No, the nWo arrival didn't change WWE history forever, and yes, their best days were behind them. Even so, this remains the finest suspense-filled ending to an episode of SmackDown ever. When Vince said, "Me and the nW...ooooooooooooo", it was bewitching.
