10 Best WWE Smackdown Main Events
8. Kurt Angle Vs. Edge - Cage Match, May 30 2002
The best feud in post-brand split WWE in 2002 was Edge versus Kurt Angle. The Olympic gold medalist was an established headliner who had found himself out of the main event scene, tasked with elevating Edge, who had been floundering in lukewarm disputes with William Regal and Booker T.
A rivalry with the red-hot Angle was definitely a step up and Edge delivered with stature-enhancing performances at Backlash and Judgement Day. At the latter event, Edge shaved Angle bald as per the Hair Vs. Hair stipulation. This would kick off the 'Kurt Angle wears a wig and headgear period'.
A little over a week after taking shears to scalp, Edge and Angle tussled for a final time inside a steel cage. It was another typically great performance from both men, starting out with mat wrestling and looking for an advantage before Angle used the cage (a 'twisted maze of steel' according to Michael Cole) to draw blood, turning the Canadian's blonde hair red.
Then came the big moves, like Angle's massive Angle Slam from the top rope. Angle had the match won, but the ref was down and resident party pooper Hulk Hogan came down to send Kurt back into the ring for more punishment. Eventually, Edge managed to fight through the pain and land a little-seen top rope diving Spear for the three count, drawing a line under their feud.
