10 Best WWE SummerSlam Openers
4. Lance Storm Vs. Edge - Intercontinental Championship (2001)
The summer of 2001 was a weird time, looking back on it. The Invasion angle was in full swing and Edge was still a smiling babyface and tagging with Christian (for the time being at least), while Lance Storm was the Intercontinental Champion and actually pushed as a threat/taken seriously.
There was no major storyline going into it or anything, just a simple us (the WWF) versus them (ECWCW Alliance). The match itself was very good, with Storm controlling the pacing and Edge providing some nice counters to help turn the tide in his favour. It was all going along nicely until the increasingly-jealous Christian strolled out to ringside.
With the ref bumped, Edge's kayfabe brother saw his opportunity and tried to win the IC strap for him but inadvertently nailed him instead. Luckily for him, it only registered a two count, and after countering a superkick Edge was able to hit the Impaler DDT for the win and his first major WWE singles title.
A true highlight of Storm's inconsistent WWE career and the jumping off point for Edge's singles run.
