When hearing the terms 'Bret Hart', 'Shawn Michaels' and 'Survivor Series', most wrestling fans tend to groan and grit their teeth for yet another re-telling of the Montreal Screwjob. This is unfortunate because 'The Heartbreak Kid' and 'The Excellence of Execution' put on a fantastic exhibition at the same show five years prior.

Before relationships soured, before the headlines, before the drama, sniping and who screwed who, Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels were the torchbearers for WWF's New Generation. The giants of the WWF's Golden Era were moving on amidst the muck of the Steroids Trial and two tag team specialists who had recently split from their partners (one admittedly more amicable than the other) were asked to bridge the gap between WWF's last boom period and the next. A daunting task to be sure, but every time the pair shared a ring was a masterclass. While the 1997 clash got more mainstream attention and Shawn's 'Boyhood Dream' coming true at WrestleMania XII is more celebrated, it was this affair at Survivor Series 1992 that put both men at the forefront.

For 26 minutes and change, the savvy technician and the cocksure Intercontinental Champion dueled over 'The Hitman's WWF Championship before one critical error in judgment gave the win to the defending champion. Bret demonstrated over the preceding year and particularly on this night that he was ready to shoulder the company, and this was the first real glimpse of HBK finding his footing en route to megastardom.

Definitely worth a rewatch.
