Tag team wrestling in World Wrestling Entertainment has one heck of a proud lineage. The company crowned its first World Tag Team Champions way back on June 3rd, 1971, when Luke Graham and Tarzan Tyler defeated Dick Bruiser (ouch) and The Sheik in a tournament final for the new straps.

113 more teams would go on to hold the belts before they were decommissioned in 2010 in favour of continuing the lineage of the WWE Tag Team Championships (created in 2002). Speaking of those belts (now called the WWE Raw Tag Team Championship), 45 teams have held those straps (including current champions The New Day).

If we add SmackDown Tag Team Champions Heath Slater & Rhyno to that list then that gives us over 150 teams who have won tag gold in WWE. Sure, there's some crossover, but we're looking at that sort of ballpark. If they are an iconic tag team in modern American wrestling, you can bet that they've won the gold in WWE.

The Steiner Brothers, Legion of Doom, The Hart Foundation, Edge & Christian, The Hardy Boyz, The New Age Outlaws and a whole host of others have won tag gold in WWE. But what of those few great teams who didn't make it to the top of the mountain?

Whether through bad timing or backstage politics, here are the 10 best tag teams who failed to win gold in WWE.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
