5. Rusev Vs John Cena (WrestleMania 31)
John Cena was the Cilit Bang of the United States division in 2015. For those unaware, Cilit Bang is a strong foam cleaner. Cena was able to dissolve some of the gunk and complacency choking the shine from the belt at the time.
Before that, Rusev rolled (literally) in to Wrestlemania 31 undefeated as United States Champion. Despite being an entertaining and believable champion, Rusev was still in need of that one big win to propel him forward. With both superstars treated to WrestleMania worthy entrances, this match is a fifteen minute showcase of Cena’s almost relentless desire to relish his time on the grandest stage.
Rusev never looked out of place in the ring with Cena. The chemistry seemed to come easy. The only downside to this contest was a reliance on a linear structure. At no points did the match make you believe that Rusev was going to cause an upset. Despite being undefeated, Rusev fell to one AA . He arguably hasn’t truly recovered since.
Aftermath and politics aside, the match itself saw the United States Championship finally treated as a commodity at the biggest show of the year.
