10 Best WWE WrestleMania Midcard Title Matches
6. William Regal Vs Rob Van Dam (WrestleMania X8)
William Regal was tailor made for the WWE midcard.
Some may
read that as a slight on his skills - but the exact opposite is true. With one of
the most clearly defined and well portrayed characters in recent history, Regal
had the in-ring skills and crowd knowledge to make fans long to see him get his
comeuppance.
With his uptight British demeanour, Regal was the perfect foil to some of the more outlandish and popular superstars of the era. Stars such as Jeff Hardy, Chris Jericho and Edge all benefited from programs with the Brit. After delivering a solid WrestleMania opener with Chris Jericho at Wrestlemania X-Seven, WWE called on Regal to do the same a year later in Toronto.
The brash and cocky Rob Van Dam was his opponent with Regal’s Intercontinental Championship on the line. The story of the match revolved around Regal’s insistence on ultilzing the brass knucks stashed away in his trunks. After RVD thwarted one attack, Regal went to the well again, only to fall victim to a Five Star Frog Splash in front of the nearly seventy thousand rabid fans in attendance.
The match was deceptively simple and concise. It was the perfect way to kick off a stacked WrestleMania.
