1. The Road Warriors
While not technically born in Chicago, this tandem put Chicago on the wrestling map and into our collective hearts well before CM Punk did. Composed of the late Michael Hegstrand (Hawk) and Joe Laurinaitis (Animal) this imposing tag team dominated wrestling promotions wherever they went. The two would meet in Chicago in the early '80s, where they developed a friendship, and started to train together.
Soon after meeting manager Paul Ellering in 1982, a duo seen by many as one of the greatest tag teams in wrestling history were put together. They’ve divided and conquered WCW, New Japan, AJPW, and of course, the WWE. The Road Warriors made the Chicago Street Fight famous, introducing it to multiple wrestling promotions, most notably the WWE at WrestleMania 13 where they teamed up with Ahmed Johnson to defeat the Nation of Domination.
Sadly, in 2003, Hegstrand died in his sleep, but the legacy of the Road Warriors will live on in the annals of wrestling history. Brash and always unforgiving, this team represents everything rough and tough about Chicago – and their fans wouldn’t want it any other way.
