10 Big Concerns Heading Into WWE SummerSlam 2020
8. The Tag Belts Mean Nothing
We’ve all known for a long time that the tag belts don’t mean anything, but this year, it’s so apparent.
Thankfully Women’s Tag Team Titles are in a meaningful storyline and have been on the line in great matches recently, but there’s absolutely no depth to the division right now, and they’re likely not going to be on the SummerSlam card.
However the men’s titles? Oh boy.
On Raw, the deeply disappointing reign of the Street Profits goes up against the team they were supposed to fight at WrestleMania in Andrade and Angel Garza. The match should be good, but the build has revolved around poisoning (?) and Andrade should be on a more elevated position on the card by this stage of his career. There are no real audience stakes in whoever wins, which is not ideal for SummerSlam. On Smackdown, the great tag team of Nakamura and Cesaro feel aimless, with a feud against the Lucha House Party feeling designed for the pre-show.
There’s a lack of true narrative drive or competitive desire for these belts like there was a few years ago at SummerSlam, they just feel like empty trophies and will be forgotten about instantly after the show ends.
