10 Big Talking Points From WWE Raw (July 11)
6. What's Next For John Cena?
It's no secret that WWE has spent the last couple of years trying to replace John Cena with Roman Reigns. It's also no secret that, even though Reigns has become the most-pushed man on the roster, he's still dwarfed by Cena when it comes to mainstream recognition - in fact, he'll be hosting the ESPY Awards on Wednesday.
That's all well and good, but it was curious how the company's announcers talked about Cena while hyping the draft. During a great Kevin Owens versus Cesaro match, Michael Cole, JBL, and Byron Saxton started speculating about how the draft might go, and how whomever Raw and Smackdown's commissioners end up being should handle it.
When talk turned to Cena, the announcers acknowledged that he was a franchise player and possible the greatest WWE superstar of all time, but they also questioned just how much more he has to give to wrestling, citing his years in the business and his increasing outside commitments. Cena has always been vocal about wanting to remain in WWE for as long as possible, so hearing the announcers more or less write him off was odd.
