10 Big Talking Points From WWE Royal Rumble 2017
2. Jericho Sets The Record
Thanks largely to his heel antics of spending much of the match outside the ring, Chris Jericho became this year’s ironman of the Royal Rumble, putting in a shift of one hour and 13 seconds as he made it all the way to the final four.
Not only is that a great achievement for someone of 46 years old, it also means that he’s smashed the record for the longest total time spent in the Royal Rumble, and in doing so become the first man to breach four cumulative hours in the match.
The record he overtakes is that of Triple H, who has spent 3:59:57 in Rumble action, though Jericho’s haul now stands far higher than that at 4:56:59.
By my calculations, it also makes Jericho the oldest performer in history to have lasted more than sixty minutes.
In terms of longer-term repercussions, this isn’t necessarily the biggest of talking points. But for the historical significance, and for the sake of giving credit for an absolutely awesome achievement, Jericho makes the list.
