WWE's decision to pull Roman Reigns from the SmackDown Elimination Chamber match and instead have him defend the Universal Title against whoever survivors the bout was a smart move that prevents The Head of the Table from burning pinfalls or submissions on people who could potentially challenge later down the line. It also gives the bookers a great opportunity to hot-shot a one-off title defence against someone like Cesaro, who could win the Chamber, then fall to Reigns in a valiant effort straight after.

Just don't expect the push to be sustained beyond that.

Like Shinsuke Nakamura, Daniel Bryan, and other fan favourites currently showing out for their superior SmackDown workrate, Cesaro will likely be cast aside on the Road to WrestleMania 37. Them's the breaks. A show more about glitz and glamour won't spotlight your favourite wrestlers' favourite wrestlers, but Bad Bunny and whatever returnees Vince McMahon can will into travelling during a global pandemic, and we're going to have to put up with it.

Cesaro, Nakamura and co. will keep working fun sprints on television. At 'Mania, the best they can hope for is an Intercontinental Title multi-man.
