10 Big WWE Pushes That Were Stopped Dead (And Why)
7. Billy Gunn
"Hi my name's Billy and I won King of the Ring. The only problem is that everyone knows that I absolutely suck."
That's the sound of a floundering push being put out of its misery by The Rock in 1999. The promo from an episode of Heat perfectly summed up Billy Gunn's failed single push with a harsh honesty that few could argue with.
During the decade in which The King of the Ring was a yearly tradition in WWE, the winners of the tournament were often guaranteed a prominent push and future World Championship reign. Out of the ten winners, only three failed to capitalise on their win and become World Champion - Mabel, Ken Shamrock and, you guessed it...Billy Gunn.
The epitome of "Tag Team Specialist" Gunn was pushed strongly in 1999. After matches with the likes of The Rock and Triple H, WWE simply asked too much from their fans to accept a man with the moniker "Mr Ass" as a new top level character.
Gunn was often embarrassed in promo's and treated as an afterthought despite some initial crowd interest. Many have claimed that Gunn's fondness for prohibited substances made him unpopular in the locker room and halted any further success. Ultimately, Gunn was fed to The Rock in order to further polish The Great One's already glittering trajectory.
