10 Biggest Disappointments From Cody Rhodes’ AEW Career
2. The Unfulfilled Heel Teases
Anyone who has followed Cody’s career knows he is great at playing heel and a turn could have breathed new life into his AEW run. So it became increasingly frustrating when Cody insisted the turn was never gonna happen, even as his babyface run seemed to become untenable.
But Cody wasn’t entirely unaware of the discourse around him. He enjoyed playing up to the boos at times and was always dropping in clues to keep us guessing.
Of all the teases, Cody’s elaborate red white and blue (and gold) jackets seemed the clearest indication that Cody really would turn to the dark side at some point. This wasn’t some off the cuff attempt to wind up a crowd, like smirkingly weighing up which tunnel to head down. The jackets were a premeditated choice.
They seemed clearly influenced by jingoistic, bleach blonde bastard Homelander from TV show The Boys. A character who maintained a polished, heroic public persona but was secretly a nasty piece of work.
Those fans convinced Cody still knew what he was doing held on to clues like these as proof that there was some long term storytelling going on. We waited in keen anticipation for the teases to pay off. Instead, they only added to the confusion around his character and led nowhere.
