The year was 1963, and Bruno Sammartino defeated Buddy Rogers inside Madison Square Garden to begin a WWE Championship reign that would last all of seven years. Obviously this is still the longest reign to date, and quite simply won't ever be beaten.

The title reign started with a total squash match however, with Sammartino defeating the original Nature Boy in just 55 seconds. All it took was a couple of blows, a Bearhug and a Torture Rack. As we say here in Serbia, 'to je to'. (That is that).

The rumour goes that the match was so short because Rogers had suffered a heart attack in the weeks leading up to the match and was therefore in no condition to perform. Another source states that Rogers was lead to believe he would lose via disqualification, although the submission finish suggests otherwise.

Even so, as far as squash matches go this one was pretty high profile was back in the 60s. A sub-one minute victory that lead to a more than seven year reign on top.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
