Eddie caught AEW’s attention by cutting a scathing promo on Cody Rhodes from a wrestling show in a parking lot. His first night in AEW, “The Mad King” says it was Cody who told him to repeat the trick on live TV.
The mic time wasn’t a given by any means. No other TNT title hopeful was doing that but Cody knew that by tearing into him, Eddie stood the best chance of getting over with the fans watching at home, even though it was only wrestlers and crew at ringside.
Cody also took some pretty nasty bumps for the guy in a no disqualification match that complimented Kingston’s brawling style. That promo and the pair’s match got #SignEddieKingston trending on Twitter and Eddie is now one of the hottest stars on the roster.
While Kingston himself deserves every credit for getting himself over with fans to such an extent, Cody can claim to have had a big hand in that success. He helped give Eddie the platform he needed to succeed.
