10 Biggest Mistakes WWE Made In 1997

10. Shawn Michaels Vacates WWF Heavyweight Title

Over the years, there's been a lot of noise made over the idea that Shawn Michaels wasn't always the most trustworthy kind of guy. By his own admission, Michaels was difficult to deal with throughout the mid-to-late-1990's. Struggling with the pressure of being WWF Champion, he also seemingly couldn't cope with the idea of dropping the belt to one of his most fierce rivals. The original plan for WrestleMania 13 was a rematch between Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart. That bout wouldn't take place as scheduled, because Michaels disclosed a knee injury that would remove him from the active roster for most of the first part of the year. In Bret Hart's mind, this equated to Shawn simply not wanting to return the favour he had done for him at 'Mania XII. "Losing his smile" and vacating the belt in February turned out to be regrettable for the WWF. They lost a huge bout for WrestleMania, and the entire thing just felt like a cop out. Even at the time, some fans smelled a rat when it came to the tears that Shawn was shedding tears on TV, and the incident didn't exactly start the year with a bang.
