10 Biggest Mistakes WWE Made In 1997

5. Making Triple H 'King Of The Ring'

Admittedly, Triple H was a far better 'King Of The Ring' than Mabel was in 1995. There can be no denying that the big man was the worst 'King' choice in history. However, Hunter Hearst Helmsley was far from one of the best. WWE history has been rewritten somewhat when it comes to Triple H during the 1990's, he simply was not really over with the core audience, at least not hugely. Triple H had actually been scheduled to win the tournament the previous year, but he was in the dog house with management due to the infamous 'Curtain Call' incident at Madison Square Garden. Therefore, Steve Austin won the crown instead, uttering his 'Austin 3:16' line for the first time during his post-match promo. In 1997, Triple H made up for lot time, defeating Mankind in the final. The problem was that Mick Foley would have been infinitely more interesting a winner. Triple H's victory was treated with a fair amount of silence, which shows how little fans cared for him at this point. People weren't really outraged when he won the 'King Of The Ring', there was an incredible amount of apathy. If The Rock had been healthy, he would have been a much better choice. At least fans genuinely disliked him.
