10 Biggest Mistakes WWE Made In 1997

4. Ken Shamrock Was A Poor Post-Montreal Challenger

Coming hot on the heels of the infamous 'Montreal Screwjob' at Survivor Series, the WWF presented In Your House: D-Generation X on December 7, 1997. Before Bret Hart was overturned the previous month, there had been talks that the show would be headlined by a Fatal 4-Way, during which the Canadian would drop the WWF Heavyweight Title. Obviously, given what did occur at Survivor Series, that plan was out the window. Instead, Shawn Michaels - the new titleholder - faced Ken Shamrock in the main event slot. This was a strange choice, and felt like somewhat of a letdown compared to what had happened previously. Shamrock was quickly morphing into a decent wrestler, but fans really didn't buy him as the man who could defeat Michaels and win the gold. An awkward match capped off a rotten Pay-Per-View. It really came across like the promotion were just killing time until the Royal Rumble, when Michaels would face The Undertaker again. Some sort of Fatal 4-Way would have bee superior to what fans were given. Obviously, there were problems with certain stars, such as Mick Foley and Owen Hart. Both were unhappy over the way Bret had been treated, but both would have also been much better opponents for Michaels. At least there was an in-built story there.
