6. Shawn Michaels Beating Davey Boy Smith In The UK
The WWF European Title was created in February, 1997. The British Bulldog was the first champion, defeating Owen Hart in a tournament final held in Germany. At first, the belt was treated as prestigious, which is likely why one Shawn Michaels wanted it around his waist. Bret Hart notes in his book that Davey Boy Smith, his fans and his family were left despondent by what happened later that year. In September, the World Wrestling Federation crossed the Atlantic to host 'One Night Only'. The special, one-off event took place in Birmingham, England and was a SKY Box Office exclusive. In the main event, Shawn Michaels was set to face Davey Boy Smith, The British Bulldog for the WWF European Title. In the end, Michaels would leave as champion, but it was the press before the match which made that fact hard to stomach. Smith's sister had been struggling with cancer, and the grappler had went on record to say he would defend her honour against Michaels. Obviously, that didn't happen, which greatly upset everyone in attendance. As the reigning WWF Heavyweight Champ, Shawn Michaels didn't need the European Title, but he changed initial booking plans (a Smith win) and took it anyway.
