Neatly enough, it's NXT - the brand that's all about developing WWE's future - that most readily encapsulates the company's struggles with its past. 2024's ECW-themed episode was at its absolute worst when the focus was on the returning legends, with the audience looking just as non-plussed as Bubba Ray Dudley in the above photo when the former ECW star lumbered through his match.
And then there was Bischoff. The former WCW head honcho's appearance led to a catastrophic ratings dip, as WWE failed to realize that Eric Bischoff hasn't meant anything to casual WWE fans for 20 years, and hardcore fans can get all they want from him due to his constant appearances on the podcast circuit.
WWE can't simply trot out former headliners and expect the audience to clap like trained seals. Unless there's a specific purpose beyond "'Member them?", the company needs to let the legends of the past stay there.
