10 Biggest Shocks In WWE WrestleMania History

9. Hogan Slams Andre

Obviously this one seems a little tame nowadays, but context is everything in wrestling. Back in 1987, the idea of Hulk Hogan - or indeed any mortal man - lifting the majestic Andre The Giant off his feet and slamming him to the canvas seemed the stuff of fantasy. It just couldn’t be done.

But WrestleMania III was no ordinary event. The stars aligned that night; few matches have ever been built so well, and the sheer force of narrative and razzle dazzle turned a fairly stodgy match into something majestic.

When Hogan managed to deliver the body slam to Andre, the response tells the story - this was a feat of astonishing strength, and a moment which still ranks up there with the most iconic in wrestling history, no matter what has come since.

Indeed, it’s presented with such conviction that you can forget the fact that Hogan himself had already done this at least twice. History disappears for this moment in the Pontiac Silverdome; the legend becomes reality.
