10 Biggest Stories From IMPACT's Slammiversary And What They Mean Going Forward

9. Johnny Impact Victorious Over International Stars

The opening contest of a wrestling show often sets the tone for the rest of the evening, and Slammiversary’s first bout did just that. On offer was a fast-paced and high-flying four-way bout which recalled the glory days of TNA and its revolutionary X-Division style. While Rich Swann was originally set to compete, he was unable to appear due to injury. Stepping into his place was longtime IMPACT veteran Petey Williams — as always, equipped with his patented Canadian Destroyer. The match also featured Johnny Impact along with Mexico’s Fenix and Japan’s Taiji Ishimori.

Each competitor landed big moves and stunning dives throughout — such as Ishimori’s moonsault to the outside and Petey’s hurricanrana on the floor. However, it was Johnny Impact who claimed the win following a Starship Pain to Fenix. The match wasn't only a nod toward the heritage of IMPACT but was also a showcase of its future with stars from across the world on loan from international companies via some current promotional partnerships.

While IMPACT’s deals with other promotions were highlighted, Johnny Impact stole the spotlight. Still, the former WWE Tag and Intercontinental champ has yet to win any title as a part of the IMPACT roster. The question remains, however, which belt he’s more interested in pursuing. But before he can get ahead of himself, the frightening Kongo Kong may look to renew their rivalry. While he may have been absent from IMPACT’s sixteenth anniversary, Kong hasn’t gone anywhere — and neither has his hatred for Johnny Impact.
