10 Biggest Stories From New Japan's G1 Climax 28 And What They Mean Going Forward
7. Zack Sabre Jr. Proves He Belongs Among The Heavyweights
Zack Sabre Jr. has long been touted as possibly the best technical wrestler in the modern world. While the British superstar is known for his successes in UK's RevPro and even the California-based Pro Wrestling Guerrilla, he has only recently began to ascend the ranks of NJPW - continuing his move up the ladder with an impressive G1 performance.
With a shocking win over Tetsuya Naito and a total accumulation of twelve points during the event, Sabre cemented his place in New Japan's Heavyweight division. In fact, those twelve points were enough to land ZSJ a tying spot atop the tournament’s B Block - along with Naito, Kota Ibushi, and Kenny Omega. Ultimately, Ibushi went on to the finals, but the doubts of many as to whether Sabre belonged among NJPW’s best were quieted.
With a further win over Hirooki Goto, he may look to parlay that into a title match against the NEVER Openweight champ in the coming months. Even still, ZSJ may find himself in contention for Juice Robinson's United States title after also defeating the champ during the tournament. Sabre has already expressed interest in challenging for that belt - an opportunity he rightfully deserves.
