The on-screen, main roster relationship between Kevin Owens and Triple H started on the 29 August 2016 edition of RAW. In a fatal-four-way match between Owens, Roman Reigns, Big Cass and Seth Rollins, Owens won his first World Title after Triple H interfered allowing Owens to win the Universal Title.

Although Triple H turned on Rollins in the match, it appeared to the audience that Triple H had a clear vested interest in ensuring that Owens became the Universal Champion. Rollins started to take the stance that Owens was the "The Chosen One" and that Triple H chose Owens over him, but nothing of substance surfaced from this plot thread other than it leading to a feud between Triple H and Rollins.

The next interaction between Owens and Triple H wouldn't be until five months later, moments before the Festival of Friendship segment. Owens and Triple H were seen backstage discussing something in depth. It was rumoured that Triple H was the one who suggested that Owens should turn on Jericho, thus ending their friendship.

Sadly, the association was never to be mentioned on WWE TV ever again. The next time the two interacted was the 18 November 2019, edition of RAW. In the segment building towards Survivor Series, Triple H tried to recruit Owens to Team NXT for the RAW vs. SmackDown vs. NXT showdown. However, none of their prior history on main roster programming was mentioned.
