The main event of SummerSlam 2016 featured Brock Lesnar vs. Randy Orton for the first time ever on PPV. Lesnar won the match via TKO; however, the booking of the match finish had a much bigger picture in mind that never came to fruition.

During the closing moments of the contest, Orton was opened up by Lesnar. The visual of Orton on the floor covered in blood, as Lesnar stood over him was indeed impressive.

As Lesnar continued his attack on Orton after the match, SmackDown Commissioner Shane McMahon came down to the ring to confront Lesnar and check on Orton. Lesnar would respond to this by hitting Shane with an F5 to finish off the PPV.

The idea behind the attack on Shane was that it was going to lead to a match between Lesnar and Shane at WrestleMania 33. However, Lesnar had other ideas and wasn't a fan of the booking plans. Therefore, the fact that Lesnar attacked Shane at SummerSlam was never mentioned on WWE TV again. This left a dangling plot thread as to why Shane didn't want revenge and why Lesnar had a personal issue with the SmackDown Commissioner.
