Dolph Ziggler has had an interesting WWE career. He's regularly featured but he's never presented as a legitimate threat. This is a shame as, at one stage, Ziggler was one of the most popular talents in the entire company.

One of Ziggler's more infamous storylines began in late 2017, one which fans are still baffled by to this very day. Ziggler won the United States title at the Clash of Champions PPV. On the following edition of SmackDown, Ziggler held an in-ring celebration that was a retrospective of his WWE career. Ziggler would tell the fans that they didn't deserve his talents. He then proceeded to place the US Title in the middle of the ring and walked away.

Ziggler then returned at the 2018 Royal Rumble match. He entered at number 30 and he lasted an underwhelming two minutes before being eliminated by Finn Bálor. The fact that Ziggler gave up the US Title and the reason this bizarre decision was never be mentioned by WWE or Ziggler himself ever again.

It raises the question: what was the purpose of the storyline? It did nothing for Ziggler and it certainly didn't add prestige to the US Title.
