When WWE announced that former World Champion Dave Bautista would be returning to the company in 2014, it soon became clear that Vince McMahon had big plans for 'The Animal' at that year's Show of Shows.

However, it's fair to say that his wasn't the name on fans' lips when it came to the person they wanted to see challenging for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania XXX. Their hearts belonged to the pluckiest of underdogs in Daniel Bryan, the unofficial chosen one of the masses when it came to who they thought should come out on top in that year's Royal Rumble.

WWE clearly knew this as their audience had been backing Bryan for months, even nearly taking the roof off the place on the night of the Rumble during his losing effort against Bray Wyatt. So, how did Vince McMahon repay those chanting "YES!" at the top of their lungs? By leaving him out of the titular match completely, of course.

As soon as Rey Mysterio popped out at number 30, those inside of the Consol Energy Center let their feelings be known. The masked babyface was booed out of the building due to simply not being the bearded boy they were waiting for, and that negative noise only grew as Batista pointed at the 'Mania sign post-victory.

Our GOAT would get there in the end. But, for more than a second, it looked like this painful swerve was setting the table for the stalest main event in 'Mania history.
