9. Did AEW Try To Do A Four Horsemen Reboot?

When conducting an in-ring promo early in his reign as TNT Champion, Cody Rhodes revealed that he wasn't the first person that Tony Khan called when starting conversations about a promotion under the working title of World's Best Wrestling.

He was the fourth person Khan called, and even though it may well have been true, Cody said it, four fingers aloft in the pose of the classic stable, as part of a teaser campaign.

Maybe.

Meanwhile, as they tore through the tag team division in that early summer of 2020, FTR's Dax Harwood "subtly" wiped the sweat off his chest using four fingers as he made a pin attempt.

Despite rumours of a Cody, FTR and Shawn Spears-fronted Four Horsemen reboot, the pieces didn't quite fit together. As Dusty's son, and somebody who never wanted to play heel in AEW - and in fact thought the old alignments were passé altogether at that time - Cody was never joining. Maybe he was foreshadowing his own fate? Or perhaps it was a red herring.

In parallel, it was reported that Arn Anderson, a founding member of the original, iconic stable, was attempting to secure the trademark (he eventually managed to do that in 2022).

It never took off - when pressed, FTR told Sports Illustrated that it would represent a "step backward". Cody played coy with TalkSPORT, saying that no seeds had actually been planted - "Maybe a few baby seeds have grown into this speculation".

So was it all just fantasy booking?

Or could they not get the IP?
