10 Biggest Unsung Heroes Of WWE's Current Era
3. Santos Escobar
Finally, after months of being the current Cruiserweight champion, Santos Escobar, the former El Hijo del Fantasma, is making his TakeOver debut against Isaiah 'Swerve' Scott this weekend. Since becoming the champion, Escobar has not been presented in NXT with regularity, not appearing in the slightest for several weeks of TV and having inconsistent narratives that haven’t been given room to breathe.
This is infuriating because on a purely narrative level, little NXT has done all year has sparked the level of immediate interest as the heel turn of Fantasma into Escobar did. It was an absolutely masterful decision, taking advantage of the wretched situation they’d put themselves in with Drake Maverick’s firing and creating a heel superstar in the process. Escobar has the look, the charisma, the immaculate skill in the ring and most importantly, he’s an antagonist with definitive characteristics.
It's a shame that Escobar’s genuinely incredible performances have been overlooked by creative and the majority of fans. Hopefully his long-overdue Takever appearance shows everyone just how essential Santos Escobar is to NXT.
