9. Timothy Thatcher - NXT

Slotting himself effortlessly into a stacked roster, Timothy Thatcher has been a revelation this year, excelling as a sinister mat technician with an understated, old-school charm.

Bouncing back from a rushed debut and heel turn against Matt Riddle, Thatcher contributed to one of the best pieces of wrestling television of 2020 at May 27’s ‘Fight Pit’ match. As Mauro Ranallo yelled about carotid arteries, Thatcher and Riddle brawled in an exciting shoot-fight style that was noticeable in its tight structure, technicality, and realism, with Thatcher seemingly losing two teeth as the programme went to break.

The quality of Thatcher’s matches has been consistently high ever since, regardless of their place on a card. Whether providing a solid mat-based contest with Finn Bálor or helping Damian Priest reach his potential as North American Champion, Thatcher has succeeded at putting others over in the big matches, though he has won few himself. Being so new to the company, many performers would have lost momentum from one too many defeats, but Thatcher has retained both his aura and fan interest, thanks in part to his excellent ‘Thatch-As-Thatch-Can’ segments, in which he mercilessly applies submissions to young trainees while launching into tirades of psychotic proportions.
