10 Biggest Unsung Wrestling Heroes Of 2020
5. Sonya Deville - WWE
Before being written off television in August 2020, Sonya Deville appeared to be approaching the highest echelons of the women’s division, giving Bayley a run for her money as the top heel performer.
Despite only being active for six months of the year, Deville produced some of the best character work of any wrestler across the industry in 2020, using every opportunity to deliver intense, emotional promos that sold her feud with Mandy Rose so well that a hair vs. hair gimmick was initially added to it.
In the run-up to WrestleMania 36, Deville and Rose were given the combination of an Otis love triangle and a SmackDown Hacker angle to work with, without the safety net of a rabid crowd looking for a ‘WrestleMania moment’. Despite the actual match featuring Dolph Ziggler, Sonya Deville was the feud’s driving force, swearing revenge on Rose for her betrayal in impassioned, maniacal segments. Deville soon took centre stage, assaulting Mandy, and smearing lipstick so effectively across her ex-partner’s face that it resembled blood. With the talent and creativity she has showcased throughout this year, Sonya Deville has asserted herself enough for a return to the top of WWE’s programming as soon as she is ready.
