Although everyone involved did their absolute best, the women of both RAW and SmackDown were given the arduous task of making 70,000 cups of lemonade out of a few measly lemons. The SmackDown Women’s Championship match was painfully rushed, cut to five minutes so that Pitbull could increase worldwide earplug sales by 50%, and other matches could run on longer than was really necessary.

Bayley, Charlotte, Sasha, and Nia were given a little longer to work with, but neither brand’s women had enough time to construct a great multi-woman match.

The SD bout was essentially a series of people running in and out of the ring, before Naomi picked up a predictable win, whereas RAW’s serviceable elimination match was a huge step down from last year’s show-stealer, and lacked a lot of the intensity present in a lot of the matches Charlotte, Bayley, and Sasha have had in the past.

It’s commendable that WWE wanted to put as many of its women on the card as possible, but it feels like hot feuds and carefully built matches were sacrificed in favour of token gestures, which does a disservice to the incredibly talented superstars involved, and all the work they’ve put in to make their brand’s divisions stand out.
