1. The Killing Of Bruiser Brody
The date is July 16th 1988. The venue is the Juan Ramón Loubriel Stadium in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. Bruiser Brody, one of the most famous independent wrestlers in the world, is about to lose his life.
On the night of World Wrestling Council show, Brody was approached backstage by José González, also known as Invader 1. He invited the behemoth to step into the showers to discuss some “business”. A few minutes later, Brody had been fatally stabbed.
González has always said he acted in self-defence. However, those close to the situation claim that this was a pre-meditated attack. Brody was about to enter a position of power in Puerto Rican wrestling and it’s likely that González's career would have suffered as a result. Nobody has ever been found guilty of Brody’s death. González was acquitted by a Puerto Rican court, despite many inconsistencies and suspected flaws in the prosecution. The story still fascinates wrestling fans to this day.
It’s important to remember the human cost of this tragic tale. Brody was only 42 years old and one of the most influential wrestlers of all time. He deserved much better than this miserable end.
