10 Biggest WWE Missed Opportunities In SummerSlam History

7. Triple H Fails To Win His First WWE Title In 1999

In 1999, Triple H had emerged from Degeneration-X and had come into his own as a main event Superstar. Hunter had put the right amount of distance between himself and his former faction and it was a wise move on WWE's part. Fans were able to look past DX and see Hunter as The Cerebral Assassin, the man that would stop at nothing to become the best. However, the WWE Championship was not in the cards for him at SummerSlam in 1999. That night saw the title being contested in a triple threat match that also included Mankind and the champ, Stone Cold Steve Austin. While The Game's forward progress had become very evident among fans and many knew what was to come in terms of championships, none of that happened at SummerSlam. Triple H put in a very good effort at the event and looked impressive as always but championship immortality still remained just out of his reach. Rumors ran rampant online that perhaps Austin did not want to put The Game over, as he felt it was too soon for him. Since Austin was the company's top star at the time, he definitely would have had a great deal of influence in who would or would not beat him for the championship. And even though Triple H challenged and defeated Mankind on the following Monday Night Raw to become the New WWE champion, the rumors lived on. Had Austin prevented Triple H from winning the WWE title at SummerSlam? While Hunter's legacy and career accomplishments are not in question, the fact is that seemingly ill timed win still is. Fans are accustomed to seeing the best reach that top level on the pay-per-view stage so to see Triple H win it on Raw instead was a real curiosity. Was it seen as a consolation prize by some of the WWE faithful? Who knows perhaps how the company would have booked Hunter if he had won it all as many expected, at SummerSlam?
