10 Biggest WWE Missed Opportunities In SummerSlam History
3. Booker T Loses WCW Title To The Rock In 2001
The Rock returned to WWE in 2001 and the company he came back to was under siege. Shane McMahon had been at the helm of The Alliance, a massive stable of WCW and ECW stars that had invaded WWE and sought to take over. The union between both defunct companies took direct aim at Vince McMahon and the man with his finger on the trigger was the WCW champion, Booker T. The Rock represented WWE and was the one man that could physically stand up to The Alliance, to take momentum back for the fans. At SummerSlam, he did just that when he faced and defeated Booker T to become the new WCW champion. While WWE was obviously going to prevail in this storyline, the fact is that the company had a prime opportunity to do something different and it chose not to. A lot of work was done to convince fans that The Alliance could win the day and ultimately rule in WWE but of course that did not happen. Vince McMahon had defeated his biggest rival in WCW and to imagine that he would give them any sort of important moment on the air was perhaps too much of a stretch for anyone to believe. However, Booker T had put his time in and earned his spot; if anyone deserved to shine that night, it was him. Going over on The Rock would have been huge for Booker and been a major twist in this angle. Of course, that did not happen and it ranks as one of the biggest missed opportunities in SummerSlam history.
