One of the earlier examples of an organized mass downsizing came two weeks before the 2004 Survivor Series, when the company parted ways with ten performers that weren't exactly higher up on the pecking order at the time. This included Billy Gunn, Chuck Palumbo, and Rico, two years after their highly-publicized run playing up homosexual stereotypes.

Also on the chopping block were Test, who was recovering from near-career-ending spinal fusion surgery at the time, as well as his former partner A-Train. Divas Gail Kim, Nidia, and Jazz were axed weeks after participating in a battle royal for the Womens' championship at Taboo Tuesday. Jazz's husband Rodney Mack also received his release, as did former FBI member (and teammate of Palumbo's) Johnny Stamboli.
