The Hulk Hogan vs Shawn Michaels SummerSlam match is real oddity. Watching it back, you'd think that, for one night only, Shawn Michaels had gone pants-on-head insane. He oversells all of Hulk's offence to the point of parody. Look at this:

The reason for this farce of a match is simple: a clash of egos. At this stage in their respective careers, HBK and Hogan were bigger than bigshots, were career backstage politicians, and had a lot of weight to throw around. Unfortunately for Shawn, Hogan's influence was bigger.

Originally the match was to be a face vs face confrontation, but Hogan nixed that, preferring a more traditional heel vs face matchup. Hogan got his wish and Michaels, against his wishes, turned villain. HBK made the most of his villainous role, including an astonishingly good heel promo in Montreal, under the provision that the Summerslam match would be the first in a series, with Shawn picking up at least one victory of his own. However, just before Summerslam, too late to change the card, Hogan announced that because of 'back problems', he would only be wrestling the one match, and winning.

HBK was furious and decided to make a mockery of the entire match.
