10 Biggest WWE Summerslam Controversies
3. The WWE 2K14 Debacle
During the SummerSlam Axxess event, a special panel was curated by Jim Ross to promote 2K Sports' upcoming game, WWE 2k14. Amongst the star-studded panel guests were Paul Heyman, Steve Austin, Daniel Bryan and Mick Foley. It also featured an intoxicated Ric Flair.
Ric was coming off one of the most traumatic periods of his life. His son, Reid, had died 5 months before and it was probably too soon for Flair to be publicly working with the company.
In a drunken state he hijacked the proceedings, riffed that Daniel Bryan didn't belong on the stage (days before he was set to wrestle in Summerslam's main eventand enter a big program with HHH), mentioned his son's death and stated that John Cena was a big drinker.
Even though 2K Sports was thrilled to have the attention that the 'train wreck' brought them, the WWE was furious. Flair was pulled from making a surprise appearance at the PPV and JR was fired from the company for failing to control the Nature Boy (and potentially for having a drink on the job himself). Flair's Legends contract was even in jeopardy, which should give some idea of the backstage controversy caused.
